DEVI transforms period poverty into parity through tech and perception reform, empowering millions in India.

Collective Consciousness is a not for profit organization that leverages the privileged who have access to opportunities to create a more egalitarian society. They aim to empower people across all sections of society. DEVI is a project of Collective Consciousness that is transforming the learning process around menstruation to undo socio-cultural antecedents through science, technology and perception reform around menstrual health. It seeks to address critical menstrual health and hygiene challenges in India for over 200 million women and girls. Through technology, Devi wants to overcome the information and access barriers and transform period poverty into period parity.

My role

I collaborated with a team to design intuitive interactions, user-friendly interfaces, and seamless user experiences for the platform. Using empathy-driven UX research and design thinking methodologies, I worked to deeply understand users' unique challenges and translate insights into impactful, accessible design solutions. This approach ensured the platform effectively supported the mission of empowering millions of women and girls in India.

Research

As part of our research, we engaged with students and teachers to understand their knowledge, perceptions, and biases around menstruation. Through these conversations, we documented their reactions, uncovering gaps in awareness and the impact of socio-cultural stigmas. We also observed the games they played, gaining insights into how interactive activities could shorten the learning curve while introducing new concepts. This research helped us design a more engaging and effective platform tailored to their needs and experiences.

Site map

We prioritized ease of navigation by carefully considering the technological knowledge and adaptability of the children. Through in-depth user research, we engaged directly with students to understand their needs, behaviors, and challenges. These insights guided the creation of a detailed site map, designed to intuitively structure the platform for a seamless and accessible experience. By combining user-centered design with empathy, we crafted a platform that not only addresses their needs but also empowers them with the confidence to explore and learn effectively.

Final website

This project ignited an important dialogue around menstruation, breaking long-standing taboos and challenging societal biases. By creating a platform that was accessible and engaging, we provided a space for open conversation about menstrual health, where students and teachers could share their thoughts and experiences without fear or shame. This dialogue not only fostered greater awareness and understanding but also empowered individuals to challenge the stigma surrounding periods, paving the way for a more inclusive and informed community. The success of the project lies in its ability to spark this crucial conversation and drive positive cultural change, creating a foundation for ongoing education and empowerment. Through continued engagement, the project has set the stage for future initiatives that will further dismantle barriers to menstrual health education.
